Cycling

surface provides excellent cycling and scenery. The Montague part
of the trail begins just behind the Lion's Club at the marina. Our
highways with their hills and valleys also provide a challenging
cycle. For a truly unique Island experience, explore some of our
vibrant red clay back roads, abundant with wildlife and foliage.
Watersports
· Paddle PEI, Roseneath,
at Brudenell River Provincial Park, (902) 652-2434, Guided kayak
tours for half-, full- and two-day (overnight) excursions. Enjoy
a taste of PEI's finest seafood on each of our guided trips. Situated
on the warm, scenic Brudenell River. Providing a gateway for exploration
of rivers, coastlines and off-shore islands of eastern PEI. No experience
necessary. Rentals and professional instruction for kayaking, canoeing,
windsurfing. Open from June 1 to Sep. 30.

· Vernon Bridge
From Montague, take Rte. 3 south-west, then turning east on the
Trans Canada. This tidal flat area is home to a number of shorebirds,
and canoeists will find sheltered conditions.
· Orwell Bay/Lord
Selkirk Provincial Park, From Montague, take Rte. 210 south-west.
Canoeists can launch at Lord Selkirk National Park and will find
good conditions. The whole bay is a feeding stop for migrating wild
fowl, especially in the fall. The park has a good beach with a campground
and facilities.
· Point Prim and
Pinette Provincial Park, From Montague, take Rte. 210 south-west,
then head south-east on the Trans Canada. Take Rte. 209 south to
Point Prim. The oldest lighthouse on the Island still operates here.
Picnic tables are nearby. In the park, picnic tables, toilets and
change houses are available during the summer.
· Wood Islands,
From Montague, take Rte. 3 west or Rte. 210 until they reach the
Trans-Canada. Follow the TCH to its end. A beach is located behind
the buildings at the Ferry Terminal. In the provincial park there
is a unique playground, a lighthouse, and good photography opportunities.
· Poverty Beach,
From Montague, take Rte. 17 south to Murray Harbour North and take
the side road. A good place for sunbathing, with white sand, sweeping
dunes and lots of privacy.
· Panmure Island
Provincial Park, From Montague, take Rte. 17, heading east then
north on Rte. 347 through Gaspereaux. On the Cardigan Bay side the
beach is white sand, and on the other side of the road you will
find red sand beaches. One of the Island's finest supervised beaches
for swimming and clam digging. Changing, washroom and shower facilities
are available, and there is an adjacent campground.
· Launching Point,
From Montague, take Rte. 4 north, then heading east on Rte. 311
through Cardigan to Launching. An excellent beach, with interesting
varieties of kelp and seaweed.
· Spry Point, From
Montague, take Rte. 4 north, and head east on Rte. 310. This features
an ecologically designed bio-shelter powered by wind and sun, known
as the Ark, which is now a lovely inn and restaurant.
· Greenwich Beach,
From Montague, take Rte. 4 then 313 north, heading west at St. Peter's.
Miles and miles of sand dunes - a haven for those who like private
sun-bathing.
Lighthouses
· Lower Montague,
From Montague, take Rte. 17, passing through Lower Montague, instead
of heading east to Gaspereaux.
· Point Prim, Take
Rte. 210 south-west from Montague, then head south-east on the Trans-Canada.
Take Rte. 209 south to the end. The oldest lighthouse on the island,
established 1846, is still in operation.
· Wood Islands,
From Montague, take Rte. 3 west or Rte. 210 until they reach the
Trans-Canada. Follow the TCH to its end. There are two lighthouses
assisting with the docking of the ferries. One is normally open
to the public during the day in the summer.
· Panmure Island,
Take Rte 17 east to Gaspereaux, then follow the road north. The
lighthouse, built in 1853 is open to visitors weekdays in season.
· St. Peters Harbour,
From Montague, take Rte. 313 north, then 331 west to Rte. 2. Follow
this south to the road for St. Peters Harbour.

sand beaches with lifeguards and supervised swimming areas. Lighthouse
tours. The First Nations
People hold an annual Pow Wow at Panmure Island. This spiritual/cultural
event, attracting visitors from Eastern Canada and the New England
states, includes drum bands, native crafts and a healing sweat tent.
· Kings Castle
Provincial Park, Gladstone, on Rte. 348, 3 km east of Murray River,
(902) 962-2401. Located in Gladstone, on Route 348, 3 km east of
Murray River. Kings Castle displays favourite storybook characters
in statue form. Play areas, riverfront beach, changing rooms, kitchen
shelter, pets allowed on leash. Open from June 1 to September 30.

Harbour: phonographs and Edison cylinders, fine china, depression
glass, pewter, silver, rare magazines and comics, oil lamps, a 135
year-old refinished sleigh, a fully re-created country kitchen with
stove, muskets, cooking utensils and a finished bedroom. There is
also farming equipment, from threshers to oxen wagons. A must see!
